Rum production depends on agricultural ingredients, water, energy and packaging, so sustainability is an important focus for spirits producers.

Bacardi Limited publishes an annual ESG report covering environmental and social performance. Verified figures from the FY24 Bacardi ESG Report include:

- Water: 3% absolute reduction in water consumption from FY23 to FY24, with a target to be water positive across all operations by 2030. - Climate: Net zero target for direct operations by 2040, and across the full value chain by 2050. Scope 3 carbon footprint for FY23 was reported as 1,034,373 metric tons CO2e. - Packaging: 98% of product packaging is recyclable; 32% recycled content (target: 40% by 2025). Single-use plastic reduced 64% versus the FY21 baseline. - Waste: 22 of 24 manufacturing sites achieved zero waste to landfill. - Social: The "Shake Your Future" programme has reached 20 cities across 10 countries, with 700 graduates and over 80% moving into hospitality careers since 2018.
